Corporate Governance

Following recommendations from the Conference on Corporate Governance held on 19th January 2006, CIPE in collaboration with the Pakistan Institute of Corporate Governance and the Institute of Chartered Accountants Pakistan initiated a focus group. The focus group undertook the development of a concept paper on Corporate Governance for Non-Listed Sector and as a result, additionally, a seminar on the “Corporate Governance-Beyond Listed Companies” was organized wherein CIPE invited Mr. Chris Pierce from UK to deliver a keynote speech. Mr. Pierce is an internationally known expert on Corporate Governance and Professional Standards. He has written many books several journal articles on the subject.

To start deliberation on this initiative, CIPE, PICG and ICAP organized a roundtable conference on Wednesday, November 29, 2006, which was chaired by Mr. Razi Ur Rehman, Chairman Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan. In the roundtable it was agreed that the partner organizations will establish a focus group to develop a strategic plan and will engage stakeholders in the consultative process to prepare the corporate governance guidelines for the non-listed sector.

As part of CIPE Pakistan’s continued efforts CIPE and its partners the Pakistan Institute of Corporate Governance and the Institute of Chartered Accountants Pakistan launched the Corporate Governance Guide for Family-Owned Companies on the 04th of June, 2008. With this, Pakistan becomes the first country in Asia to have such a guide. At a gathering of more than 100 leading private sector business owners, Mr. Razzak Dawood, Chairman of the Pakistan Business Council said, “Corporate governance is necessary for the creation of human, intellectual, and financial capital. I am a strong believer that good corporate governance is not a cost but rather a value addition, an investment in the future of the company.” Gregg Willhauck, CIPE’S Government and Congressional Affairs Officer, also participated and presented a report on trends in corporate governance worldwide. CIPE organized business policy roundtable on “Corporate Governance beyond listed companies”, jointly with Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan and Pakistan Institute of Corporate Governance. To facilitate this roundtable discussion, a concept paper on this topic was also prepared.
